illistrin 2
Dunfanaghy Youths 2*
(Dunfanaghy won 3-2 on pens)
Dunfanaghy Youths are through to their second final this season after beating illistrin 3-2 on penalties.
The match was very entertaining and was keenly contested between two excellent footballing teams.
Dunfanaghy opened the scoring in the 20th minute. A brilliant run by Oisin Sweeney and pass was tucked into the bottom corner by Matthew. Cian and Matthew went close a number of times after this but were thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping. illistrin stunned Dunfanaghy with a brilliant goal of their own on the stroke of half-time to leave the teams level at 1-1 at the break.
Dunfanaghy continued on the front foot in the second half. After going close a couple of times, another brilliant run and pass by Oisin Sweeney was collected by Cian. Cian took on the illistrin defence before passing across the face of the goal for Seve to convert at the back post.
Dunfanaghy was made to pay for not closing out the match when illistrin latched onto a loose ball to run through and equalise. Dunfanaghy looked to have clinched it at the end of normal time when a brilliant free-kick by Oisin Sweeney was headed of the line. 2-2 is how it finished.
We then had penalties. Rory proved to be the hero in the penalties with some brilliant saves. He took the last penalty to send Dunfanaghy through to their second final in what has been a remarkable season to date for this group of players and coaches.
Hard luck to illistrin who contributed to a brilliant game of football.
