Callum Friel Park hosted the U12 League Cup Final between Dunfanaghy and Glenea on Sunday. This is the fourth time that the near neighbours have met this year. Its safe to say both teams were very familiar with each other. The game was played in perfect conditions in front of a large crowd.
Dunfanaghy Youths took the game to Glenea from the start. Glenea defended brilliantly and restricted Dunfanaghy to shots from the edge of the box. Cian Langan put in some dangerous corners with Oisin Sweeney, almost getting on the end of them on a number of occasions. Glenea were always a threat on the break with the pace of Cormac Duggan. It remained scoreless at half time.
Dunfanaghy Youths upped the intensity at the start of the second half. The pressure paid off in the 37th when Matthew McFadden controlled the ball outside the box, beat one defender, and finished cooly into the bottom corner.
Dunfanaghy Youths were in the ascendancy. Cian broke through in the 45th minute but was denied by a wonderful save from the Glenea goalkeeper. Oisin Sweeney went close twice from corners. Rory Boyce, Dunfanaghy Youths Goalkeeper made a good save in the 50th minute to keep the lead in tact. Despite some half chances, Dunfanaghy couldn't add a second. 1-0 to Dunfanaghy Youths is how it ended. The final whistle was greeted by jubilant celebrations by Dunfanaghy.
Hard luck to Glenea. It wasn't their day, but they contested the final very keenly to the end. The game was played in a sporting manner throughout. The referee Sean Ferry had a very good game.
Dunfanaghy defence was led brilliantly by their captain Oisin Sweeney. Oisin was ably supported by the hard running of Seve Roarty and the close marking of Caolan Sweeney. Rory Boyce was very secure in goals and dealt comfortably with anything that came his way. The midfield of Oliver Ferry, Oisin Nelis, and the player of the match, Anthony Wilkinson, covered every blade of grass. Cian Langan and Matthew McFadden asked a lot of questions of the Glenea defence. They were a constant threat throughout. Liam McFadden helped stretch the defence with his pace when he came on. Odhran Sweeney, Alfie Roarty, and Dylan Robinson made up the squad. They have all made significant contributions this season.
