*U12s in Final*
Dunfanaghy Youths U12s defeated illistrin in Corry Park, illistrin on Saturday to book their place in the Division 1 League Cup Final.
It took penalties after a titanic battle between two very good teams to get a winner.
Dunfanaghy started well and took the lead after 18 minutes. Cian Langan won the ball on the right-hand side of midfield, drove into the box, and finished into the bottom corner with a sweet left foot strike.
illistrin responded immediately with a shot from long range to level the tie. This gave illistrin a huge boost, and they scored their second in the 23rd minute. So 2-1 to illistrin at half time.
Facing into breeze and the slope, Dunfanaghy knew it would take a huge effort in the second half to get back into tie. They were certainly up for the challenge and took the game to illistrin from the re-start.
Having gone close a number of times, Dunfanaghy equalised in the 45th minute. Cian dispossessed one of the illistrin defenders and went on another run and tucked the ball into the bottom corner with his right foot this time. This set up an exciting last 15 minutes.
So 2-2, it remained after 60 minutes. We were down to penalties. Oisin Sweeney, Matthew McFadden, Cian Langan, Liam McFadden, and Anthony Wilkinson scored to send Dunfanaghy through to the final 5-3 on penalties.
Hard luck to Kieran Doherty and his very talented illistrin team.
Special mention to Oisin Sweeney and Caolan Sweeney for their displays. Oliver McFadden and Liam McFadden (despite a broken wrist) made huge impacts when introduced and to Cian Langan, who was the player of the match.
We now meet our neighbours, Glenea, in the Final in Callum Friel Park on Sunday, 21st April. The kick-off for the Final is scheduled for 11.45am.
We look forward to seeing a huge local support to cheer on our team.
