Another cup final for our U12 Div1 team!
After coming from behind to beat Gweedore 2-1 in the quarter finals, Dunfanaghy faced Illistrin Athletic in the semi-final, in what was a repeat of this year’s league cup semi-final. (Dunfanaghy won on pens)
Illistrin got the advantage of a home draw for this one with Corry Park being the venue. Dunfanaghy started at a ferocious pace and Sean McCaul and Peter Druce were causing lots problems for the Illistrin defence on the wings.
Jimmy McGuinness, Cian Langan and Seve Roarty all tested the keeper before Josh Kelly rattled the post.
Dunfanaghy were dominating but Alex Doherty and Oisin Sweeney had to be on their toes to stop the talented Illistrin attackers from testing Dathi McColgan in goals.
With 25 mins on the clock Dunfanaghy finally made the breakthrough with Josh cooling slotting home the ball after his initial shot rebounded to him.
Into the second half and Dunfanaghy went close again with Jimmy putting a shot just past the post.
Illistrin being the good team they are really dug in and started to push for an equaliser committing more players forward but Dunfanaghy now bolstered with Mark Mitchell, Shay Griffin and Oisin Doherty restricted Illistrin to shots from long range which didn’t trouble Dathi and crosses from deep which Alex and Oisin Sweeney headed away to safety.
1-0 it finished to Dunfanaghy!
They now meet Illistrin’s other U12 team Illistrin Rovers in the final in Milford on Saturday at 1pm.
Good luck boys
